چکیده

This thesis presents new contributions to the area of pen-based interfaces for 3D shape modeling: (1) a simple but efficient algorithm for segmenting markings of pen input, (2) an interaction framework for pen-based applications, and (3) based on these two, a new 3D modeling environment. The segmentation of pen markings is a hidden difficulty in the development of a penbased application. It is accomplished by referencing only local shape information— specifically, convexity and monotonicity—resulting in on-the-fly segmentation. For the interaction framework, the recognition results of pen marking lead to selectiveor immediate-manipulation. With selective manipulation, the user can safely perform vague ideas as well as, in the end, decide on what an algorithmic inference offers; the interaction framework is designed not to override the user’s intention. Meanwhile, the immediate manipulation is reserved for more behavioral operations, such as sweeping and transformations. Since the geometric ambiguity prevails while mapping 2D pen markings into 3D geometric shapes, a parametric modeling style has been adopted; shape parameters of the final 3D model are directly manipulated by the user. Using this interaction framework, we propose a new pen-based 3D modeling environment.

A new modeling interface for the pen-input displays

Sketch interactions based on interpreting multiple pen markings into a 3D shape is easy to design but not to use. First of all, it is difficult for the user to memorize a complete set of pen markings for a certain 3D shape. Secondly, the system will be waiting for the user to complete the sequence of the pen markings, often causing a certain mode error. To address these problems, we present a n...

A curvature estimation for pen input segmentation in sketch-based modeling

A proper segmentation of pen marking enhances shape recognition and enables a natural interface for sketch-based modeling from simple line drawing tools to 3D solid modeling applications; user input is otherwise restricted to draw only one segment per one stroke. In general, the pen marking segmentation is achieved by detecting the points of high curvature-called, segmenting points-and splittin...

Informal User Interface for Graphical Computing

This paper explores a concept of sketch-based informal user interface for graphic computing, which can be characterized by two properties: strokebased input and perceptual processing of strokes. A sketch-based graphics input prototype system designed for creative brainstorming in conceptual design is introduced. Two core technologies for implementing such a system, adaptive sketch recognition a...

Automatic Parsing and Recognition of Hand-drawn Sketches for Pen-based Computer Interfaces

Pen-based computer interaction is becoming increasingly ubiquitous as evidenced by the growing interest in Tablet PC’s, electronic whiteboards and PDA’s. Many of these devices now come equipped with robust hand-writing recognizers. However, a problem that remains largely unsolved is the recognition of graphical input such as schematic sketches and diagrams. When faced with such input, these dev...

Haptic Pen: A Tactile Feedback Stylus for Touch Displays

In this paper we present a system for providing tactile feedback for stylus-based touch-screen displays. The Haptic Pen is a simple low-cost device that provides individualized feedback for multiple simultaneous users and can operate on large input displays as well as ordinary surfaces. We combine a pressure-sensitive stylus with a small solenoid to generate a wide range of tactile sensations. ...
